BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi Vice President (VP) Tareq al-Hashemi told U.N. representative in Iraq Ad Melkert on Wednesday that decisions made by the Accountability and Justice (Debaathification) Committee is illegal.

“Article–7 of the Iraqi constitution is practically inapplicable, and the Accountability and Justice Committee within its current structure is legally unqualified to debaathificate,” al-Hashemi said in a meeting with the U.N. official according to a release issued by the VP’s office.

He said that not only the measures are illegal, but also names of debaathificated figures were not supposed to be leaked to media.

“The timing of the whole process is incorrect, especially under the current circumstances,” al-Hashemi said.

On Thursday (Jan. 7), a parliamentary source said that the Accountability and Justice Commission, the revised version of the Debaathification Committee in Iraq, had decided to exclude 14 entities from the election racing for Baath affiliation.
