Civilian casualties hit lowest level since 2003

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Civilian deaths in Iraq have hit a six-year low in November 2009 due to a decline in bombings, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official told Reuters.

“Eighty-eight civilians were killed last month as a result of acts of violence, the first time the monthly death count has dropped below 100,” according to figures released by the Iraqi Ministry of Health and published by Reuters.
“The civilian death toll in Iraq has been gradually falling for two years as the sectarian warfare unleashed between once dominant Sunni Muslims and majority Shi’ites by the U.S. invasion began to subside,” Reuters said.
“Suspected Sunni Islamist insurgents such as al Qaeda and adherents of Saddam Hussein’s outlawed Baath party are still capable of staging devastating attacks,” it added.
