BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: U.S. ambassador in Baghdad Christopher Hill and Commander of the U.S. forces in Iraq General Ray Odierno urged political leaders in Iraq to overcome their differences, according to a joint statement on Thursday.

“Iraqi political leaders have to settle their differences and take quick steps to achieve what is best for the Iraqi people’s interests so that they may practice their democratic rights on January 16, 2010,” read the statement as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

They co-stressed that the future of Iraq depends on the Iraqi leaders and people.

“While the Iraqi authorities are getting ready to adopt the election law, we reiterate our views that measures, rules and decisions adopted for the January parliamentary elections should be strictly applied to these coming elections, not for future ones,” the statement noted.
