KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: A leading figure of the Iraqi National Dialogue Front said on Thursday that Arabs will boycott the parliamentary elections in case Kirkuk not given a special status in the coming elections.
“Arabs are not prepared to compete in the elections as there are a huge increase in the number of voters; in 2004 they were 360,000 but their number ranges now between 825,000 and 850,000,” Hassan Daham al-Juburi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
He called on the U.S. administration and the U.N. to intervene to solve the Kirkuk issue.
The Iraqi Parliament again failed to approve the controversial election law because the Kirkuk cause and sent the draft law to the Political Council for the National Security to reach an agreement on it.
Al-Juburi, who is also a member of the Arab Political Council, stressed the importance of adopting the open-list system in the election law of 2009.
Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.
