URGENT / Basra governor escapes attempt with IED

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq: The governor of Basra survived an assassination attempt with an improvised explosive device (IED) on Sunday, an official source in the province said.

“An IED went off near Governor Mohammed Mosbeh al-Waeli while he was inspecting work progress on the 14 Tammuz street in al-Djzaer area, central Basra,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Waeli survived unscathed,” the source added, without giving further details.

The oil-rich port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
