BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A special force captured a sahwa (awakening) tribal leader and one of his aides in the central Baghdad area of al-Fadl on charges of “terrorism,” according to a senior security official on Saturday.
“Adel al-Mashhadani and an aide were captured by virtue of an arrest warrant,” Maj. General Qassem Atta, the official spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command (BOC), told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Meanwhile, Iraqi police sources said two people were killed and six others wounded in clashes that erupted between security forces and gunmen after the arrest of Mashhadani and his aide.
Atta, however, said that the situation is now under the control of the Iraqi security forces that imposed a security cordon on the area and deployed on the streets and environs of the al-Fadl district, denying reported deaths.
Eyewitnesses had said that armed clashes broke out between security forces and unidentified gunmen in the areas of al-Kifah and Bab al-Muadham in central Baghdad.
