BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Two sahwa (awakening) tribal fighters were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in western Baghdad on Sunday, police said.
“An IED planted by unidentified gunmen on a main road in the area of al-Ghazaliya, western Baghdad, went off when a vehicle boarded by two sahwa fighters was passing by, leaving the two of them injured and the vehicle damaged,” a security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Earlier, an Iraqi police source said two civilians were wounded from a sticky IED blast in al-Allawi, central Baghdad.
In eastern Baghdad, a suicide bomber with an explosive belt blew himself up amongst a gathering of police recruits near the Police Academy on Falastine street, leaving 23 people killed and 50 others wounded. Medics say the casualties are most likely to rise.
