Arms, ammo found near Karbala

KARBALA / Aswat al-Iraq: An amount of arms and ammunition was found west of Karbala city during a search raid ahead of provincial elections early next week, according to a local police chief.

“Security forces conducted a search raid that covered all areas surrounding the city,” Staff Maj. Gen. Ali Jassem Mohammed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
“Nearly 143 cannonballs were found in Ain al-Tamr area (85 km west of Karbala city),” Mohammed added.
“Two missiles, 21 anti-aircraft missiles, seven hand grenades, mortars and 250 gm of C4 explosives were seized in al-Rafie area (90 km west of Karbala),” he added.

The holy Shiite city of Karbala lies 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
