NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: A civilian man was killed when an improvised explosive device planted by unidentified persons inside his vehicle went off on Saturday while a gunman was arrested in a raid separately in the city of Mosul, a security source said.
“The IED went off near the Abi Tammam telephone exchange, western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq, not giving more details about the incident.
In the area of al-Corniche, central Mosul another IED went off but left no casualties, the source added, noting the explosion did not target security or military forces.
Al-Corniche is one of the safe commercial areas inside Mosul.
Meanwhile, a source from Ninewa police said security forces arrested a gunman in a search raid in eastern Mosul.
“Policemen today nabbed a gunman inside a house in a raid in al-Karama district, eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq, not giving more information.
Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
The original city of Mosul stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient biblical city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has now grown to encompass substantial areas on both banks, with five bridges linking the two sides.
Despite having an amount of Kurdish population, it does not form part of the area controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
There are different communities in Mosul like Christians, Shiites and Kurds along with a Sunni majority.
The city is also a historic center for the Nestorian Christianity of the Assyrians, containing the tombs of several Old Testament prophets such as Jonah, Yunus in Arabic, and Nahum.
