53 wanted men arrested in Nassiriya

THI-QAR / Aswat al-Iraq: A total of 53 wanted men were arrested and 60 guns were seized in separate security operations in al-Sahtra district in the last two days, a media source said on Friday.

“Joint police and army forces, backed by U.S. troops, waged a second security operation in al-shatra district, north of Nassiriya, where they arrested 10 suspected gunmen and seized nine guns,” Major Hafez Hassan Meri told Aswat al-Iraq.

The 10th division of the Iraqi army waged yesterday a security raid in al-Shatra district, where it arrested 43 wanted and suspected gunmen and found 51 guns in addition to six unlicensed vehicles.

Thi-Qar, 380 km south of Baghdad, has an area of 12,900 square kilometers (4,980.7 sq mi). In 2003 the estimated population of the governorate was 1,454,200 people.Thi-Qar was the second Iraqi province where security responsibilities were transferred from the Multi-National Force (MNF) to the Iraqis.

The province’s capital is the city of al-Nassiriya. It also includes the ancient Sumerian ruins of Ur, Eridu, Lagash and Ngirsu. Before 1976 the province was known as al-Muntafiq.
