9/23/2011 1:15 PM

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Dozens of demonstrators, who gathered in central Baghdad’s al-Tahrir (Liberation) Square on Friday, have criticized “the high cost of President Jalal Talabani’s trip to the United States,” demanding the government to implement its commitments to achieve reforms, put an end for corruption and unemployment, as well as confirming Iraq’s national unity.

“The demonstrators, who gathered in al-Tahrir Square, since 08:00 am local time on Friday, have raised slogans demanding the government to carry out reforms, strive to prevent interference by Iraq’s neighboring states in its internal affairs,” Aswat al-Iraq correspondent reported.

He said that “some of the demonstrators have criticized the allocation of 2 million US dollars to cover the costs of President Talabani’s US trip, to attend the 66th session of the UN General Assembly.”

“Such activity reflects the negligence of the officials of the country’s funds and their clear high spending at a time when the ordinary Iraqi citizen is suffering from the difficulties and the high cost of living,” they said.

The reporter quoted the demonstrators as having “confirmed the cohesion of the Iraqi people after the massacre of al-Nukeib, that claimed the lives of over 20 men while on their way from Syria to southern Iraq’s Karbala Province,” calling to “overpass the chance against those who try to plant sectarianism among the people of the united Homeland of Iraq.”

Central Baghdad’s al-Tahrir Square had been witnessing weekly demonstrations since Feb.
25th last, for active civilians, intellectuals and other citizens, demanding the government to achieve reforms, services and protect Iraq’s sovereignty.

Noteworthy is that satellite positions have uncovered a confidential document, issued by the Iraqi Presidency on Sept.
19th, on a demand by President Jalal Talabani, addressed to the Finance Ministry to allocate 2 million US dollars to cover the costs of his trip to the United States, where he would attend the General Assembly’s session in New York.
