Iraq’s Parliament Speaker denies calling for Sunni Region
6/30/2011 2:21 PM

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq’s Parliament Speaker, Usama al-Nujeify, on Thursday has denied calling for the establishment of a Sunni Region in Iraq, during his recent visit for Washington.

“I can’t accept the establishment of Regions on sectarian basis, but they can be set up on geographic basis, but not now; and I did not call for that during my visit to Washington,” Nujiefy told a news conference in Baghdad, adding that “the formation of such Regions is a constitutional right, but it should be studied carefully, and what had happened was that part of my statement was cut.”

“We call for the unity of Iraq and its cohesion, as I am responsible for the protection of everybody and defend the interest of all,” Nujeify said, adding that “the fuss had been fabricated for political motives, as I had warned that the situation had been heading towards the formation of Regions, due to the extremist centralism.”

The Iraqi Parliament’s Speaker, Usama al-Nujeify, belongs to a Sunni family in Ninewa Province, whose Governor, Athil al-Nujeify is his brother, had warned in an interview with al-Hurra Satellite TV Channel that “Sunnis in Iraq might think of secession or the establishment of a Sunni Region, if reasons for their feeling of “strong frustration and being second-grade citizens, won’t be treated.”

He had stated after his talks with leading U.S. officials, including Vice-President, Joe Biden and State Secretary, Hilary Clinton, that the sectarian balance in Iraq was “absent.”
