Nomination for Iraqi presidency announced
5/4/2014 7:30 PM

SULAIMANIYA/ Aswat al-Iraq: The Kurdish Union Party nominated today the special physician of President Jalal Talabani and Governor of Kirkuk to assume Iraqi presidency office.

Secretary of the Central Council of the Party Adel Murad stated that Dr.
Najm al-Deen Kareem is "the most acceptable character among Kurdish components to assume this post".

Murad added that the absence of President Talabani "affected the whole situation in the Kurdish region and Kirkuk".

President Talabani is under medical treatment in Germany since the end of 2012 due to a brain stroke, but no continued details on his medical status were reported.

Murad criticized the "agreement" to form the Kurdish government, stating that "no party can form the government without the Union Party as a leading and indispensible force".

On the other hand, Murad stressed the importance of preserving the historical ties between the Kurds and the Shiites, as well as other components of the Iraqi society.
