Only Iraqi gov. can decide withdrawal or not of U.S. forces - Parliament Speaker
5/5/2011 2:38 PM

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Iraqi Parliament’s Speaker, Usama al-Nujeify, has said on Thursday that the Iraqi government “is the only power to decide the withdrawal of the U.S.
forces from Iraq in their defined schedule, or their stay in the country,” adding that the Parliament’s duty is to ratify or reject the agreements, in such a way that serves the Iraqi people.

“The government is the power that shall decide the withdrawal of the American forces or their stay in Iraq, according to their schedule,” Nujeify told a news conference, attended by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“According to my own information, there are no negotiations about the stay of the American forces in Iraq after their scheduled withdrawal time,” he added.

Nujeify said that the Parliament was waiting for the decision of the Iraqi government about the said issue, being the first step, that would be followed by the Parliament’s decision as a final step, pointing out that “the Parliament is concerned to ratify agreements or reject them, according to the interests of the Iraqi people.”

U.S.
combat troops left Iraq completely at the end of August last, according to the Security Agreement, signed between Baghdad and Washington at the end of 2008, whilst the remaining U.S.
non-combat troops, estimated at 50,000, are scheduled to leave by the end of the current year.
