Majority support extension of Election Commission's term
BAGHDAD/ Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqiya MP Liqa' Wardi disclosed today that most of the parliamentary political blocs support the extension of work of the Election Commission, according to a statement by her office.
She added that "it is necessary to extend the term of its work till the formation of a new one; particularly the country is going to have the elections in Kurdistan by next September and the provincial councils at the beginning of the new year.
Wardi confirmed that her bloc supports the extension of the Commission's work, "because it is the only organ that can observe the electoral process".
She warned that "the non-extension of its work will have negative effects on the elections in the Kurdish region and the center".
The Parliament will vote tomorrow for the extension of the work of the Election Commission.
At the end of November last, the parliament renewed confidence in the work of the Commission, following an attempt to withdraw confidence from it for corruption charges.
The Commission is one of the independent organs that are attached to the Parliament directly.
