BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Press Freedoms Observatory in Baghdad has condemned the detention of the Correspondent of al-Sharqiya TV Satellite Channel, Minas Gharib, in west Baghdad’s Abu-Ghuraib district on Thursday.
The Observatory stressed in a statement, copy of which was received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency, that “an Army checkpoint had prevented al-Sharqiya Channel’s team to head towards Abu-Ghuraib’s Hamdaniya area, detaining its correspondent, Minas Gharib.”
It demanded the release of Minas Gharib, who was detained under charge that he did not possess an approval by the Baghdad Operation’s Command to enter the area.
Noteworthy is that the Baghdad Operations Command had decided last year to cancel its previous decision forcing the media and reporters to get an official approval to cover the incidents in Baghdad.
The Observatory, meanwhile, has demanded the Ministry of Defense and the Baghdad Operations Command to “stop preventing journalists to carry out their duty,” considering such acts as “being passively reflected on the Iraqi government’s goodwill.”
