11/6/2012 4:58 PM

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The UN representative to Iraq Martin Kobler ended a 2-day visit to Basra, stressing the UNs  keenness to increase development projects in the southern region, according to a UNAMI statement today.

Aswat al-Iraq was handed the statement which added that Kobler met Basra governor Khalaf Abdul Samad and head of Election Commission there.

He declared that the visit was "fruitful", where "excellent discussions" were held with the governor on UN role in developing the province and the progress made on UN Chapter VII.

Kobler announced the UN intention to invest part of Iraqi compensation funds inside the country.

Preparations for the coming provincial elections were discussed.

Kobler visited the Children's Hospital and Basra Central Prison, where he was introduced to the first "UNICEF accelerated learning programme for juvenile detainees at Basra Central Prison, the first school of its kind in Iraq, which is delivering education and training to help young prisoners adjust to life after their release," UNAMI's website reports.
