BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Legislature of al-Iraqiya bloc, Wihda al-Jumeily, has expressed expectations that the location where the next Arab Summit will be held will not be Baghdad, and that there is a possibility the Summit will be cancelled.
“Amid the current developments in the Arab Region, we expect that the location of the Arab Summit will be changed from Baghdad to another Arab city.
It may also be cancelled due to the situation in the rest of the region,” Jumeily told Aswat al-Iraq on Thursday.
Jumeily said that there was another reason that could be behind the Summit's delay, “due to the fact that many Arab Leaders will not attend the Baghdad Summit, considering Iraq’s position towards the situation in Bahrain and the statements issued by Iraqi officials in this respect."
“Many Arab States had been justifying possibility for their non-attendance of the Baghdad Summit, due to the deteriorated security situation in Iraq, along with some Leaders, who spoke about the U.S.
presence in Iraq,” she said.
“Iraq had become prepared and stable to hold the Arab Summit in Baghdad, preparations for which had cost about one billion U.S.
dollars till now,” Jumeily added.
“The holding of the Arab Summit in Baghdad is considered a great event, because it shall prove to the Arab and International Communities that Iraq is a secured and stable country and capable of receiving a big event like the Arab Summit,” she said.
Iraq’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Qais Al-Azzawi, had told Aswat al-Iraq on Wednesday that the Arab Foreign Ministers would hold a meeting on May 15th next to define a new date for the holding of the Baghdad Summit.
