211 women detained and convicted for terrorism charges, Justice Minister
12/31/2012 9:57 PM

BAGHDAD/ Aswat al-Iraq: Justice Minister Hassan al-Shammari disclosed that there are 980 women in ministry's prisons, including 211 detained and convicted for terrorism charges, while others for criminal charges.

In a joint press conference with Sheikh Ibrahim al-Sumaida'I and other members of the committee that will follow the women detained questions, he confirmed that "there is no authenticity of the news that reported the presence of 5000 women prisoners in Iraq".

He pointed out that the latest figures pointed that there are 980 women prisoners, including 211 women who were convicted for terrorism charges, while the rest were prisoned for criminal, administrative and moral charges.

Ministries of Justice and Interior deny, always, wide human rights violations in Iraqi prisons, but stress that there are individual cases, with promises to put the culprits to justice.
